XGIRLSPORT remembers September 11, 2001
March 11, 2002
Seems like a long time ago; seems like this morning.
Today the sky was bright blue just like the day it happened. I walked out of my apartment building and looked at the spot where they used to be: the Twin Towers. I used to really like my block because if you looked directly south you could see them and if you looked north and a little to the left you could see the Empire State Building.
On September 11th I came out of my building early, intending to go on a bike ride. Everyone was standing at the corner. I went to look and saw the big hole in the Tower. Two girls stood next to me and breathlessly retold how they had just seen a plane fly over head and crash into one of the Towers. I went upstairs to wake up my bike buddy on the 14th floor and tell him to look out his window.
A pre-Sept. 11, bike ride in NYC, Twin Towers off in the distance as we thought they would always be.

He was already awake; TV blaring. His terrace faces directly toward the Towers. We looked at the flames and the hole, exclaiming "What a terrible accident". As we were standing there, we saw the second plane fly into the other Tower. My heart sank as I realized this terrible thing was being done on purpose. I know New York is vulnerable, but I always believed it was an international symbol of hope, a symbol of dreams, something everyone around the world cherished as they cherish their own dreams. I thought this international feeling of hope would protect New York from acts of terrorism.

Although we suffered an awful loss on that day, I think the hope is still there. Tonight my friends and I went to Ground Zero to look at the pillars of light that shine up where the Towers once stood. Enormous pillars of light, way taller than any towers will ever be: a symbol of hope beyond earthly constructions, beyond the limits of steel and concrete - a symbol of hope that no one can destroy.

Hope is all about "mind over matter": positive thoughts and positive actions get results. Like an XGIRL on her skateboard flying over the ramp, how does she get the board to fly with her? Should be impossible, right? And yet we see it being done.

Hope is something no one can take from you. Use it!
